Solomon Schechter Day School

KASHRUT

The Conservative movement’s standards of Kashrut as they apply to Solomon Schechter are pretty simple:

• We do not allow any meat (no beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, goat) to be brought from home, even if it’s kosher.
• Fish is permitted. Salmon and tuna are good choices. No shellfish (crab, lobster or clams).
• When possible, food should have a “hechsher” (official seal that the food was prepared under rabbinical supervision).
• Processed food containing animal products such as lard, chicken stock or shellfish are not permitted.
• Packages that say “vegetable shortening” are okay. If it just says “shortening” it is NOT okay.

It is wise to think “vegetarian”, check ingredients on packaged foods and if all else fails…please ask.
